Dating Girls
atherine Turner doesn’t like blind dates, and she really doesn’t like five back-to-ba... You rock my world: Speed-d
But Turner, 24, of Allston loves rock ’n’ roll. She sees local shows all the time. “The Upper Crust at the Abbey Lounge was the last great one I saw,” she said. So it was her musical tastes, not her sex drive, that led her to Harpers Ferry for Rock ’n’ Roll Dating last month.
Building buzz (and turnout) is Rich Savoie’s job. Rock ’n’ Roll Dating impresario Savoie admits the event suffered from low attendance - there were only a score of participants compared with the 50 or so that have come out on previous nights - but he still loves the idea and thinks it will catch on, given the chance. If the upcoming session on Tuesday at Harpers goes well, it will likely become a regular monthly happening.
The formula is simple. For $12, participants are set up on three or more 20-minute speed dates. The dates take place while local bands play. If things get awkward, you just say, “I dig these guys, let’s just listen for a minute.” If the date is a success, the daters mark “yes” on scorecards, which are e-mailed the next day offering second-date possibilities.
As Turner mentioned, if turnout is low, the daters are tossed together willy-nilly. None of her dates shared her musical tastes; they didn’t even seem to love rock as much as she does. This is something Savoie is working to correct.
