For those who remember what the area looked like before, the site of the new Boys & Girls Club of Worcester at 65 Tainter St. has a quality not unlike that of the Taj Mahal.

Here in what not long ago was one of the worst neighborhoods in the city, a place where abandoned factories rotted in plain view for decades, is a modern $9 million building on 7.5 acres.

Yesterday, the people who were instrumental in its transformation held a grand opening ceremony on the brand-spanking-new indoor basketball court.

“This magnificent, new, state-of-the-art Boys & Girls Club makes my heart sing — and seeing the reaction of the kids to the club's new home would make the coldest cynic smile,” said U.S. Rep. James P. McGovern, D-Worcester.

Mr. Hadorn asked adults attending to stand if they had spent time during their childhood at the Boys & Girls Club. Dozens arose, bringing a laugh from the kids in the audience. Among the standing were Mr. McGovern; state Sen. Edward M. Augustus, D-Worcester; and state Rep. John J. Binienda, D-Worcester.
