Breezing into 3am towers yesterday to find out how the world's No.1 showbiz column works, Dave, 54, confided: "I don't get Kate Moss. What is it about her? I just don't see it. I don't really go for the classic model beauty - they're so tall. I go for quirky girls. I like the girl next door."

He became an international pin-up thanks to Knight Rider and then Baywatch, so there is no shortage of women throwing themselves at him. We certainly witnessed that first-hand when he popped into our London office!

But he's struggling to get back into the dating game after splitting with Pamela Bach, his wife of 16 years. And, strangely for a sex symbol, he reckons he hasn't a clue when it comes to chatting up the ladies.

"Dating is foreign to me, I don't know what to do," he said, blushing. "I usually hook up with the production lady when I do a show. I like people who are in the business. I need to find someone who wants to work with me, not for me.

"I want someone who is more famous than me because if a woman I like gets seduced by fame suddenly they're all smiles for the camera. It's happened a lot and it's quite disconcerting. Romance will come, you just can't look for it."

David is currently enjoying a resurgence of fame. He is aiming for the No.1 spot with his new single, Jump In My Car, which is out on Monday, has just had his autobiography Making Waves published and is starring in the new movie comedy Click.

The couple have two girls- Taylor Ann, 16, and Hayley Amber, 14. He told us: "Right now my wife and I are sorting the finances out... I keep everything as nice as possible - I don't want the kids to go through that.

"I'm more concerned about making sure my daughters are OK because they're really good with me. My wife and I raised our kids together, we were very good parents, we just didn't end up together ourselves."
