The man who called himself Pat McLaughlin is really named Peter Tobin. And the Record can reveal that he was caged in 1994 for horrific sex attacks on two 14-year-old girls.

He indecently assaulted the second victim, earning a five-year sentence. Both girls were unconscious at the time of the attacks. The sentences were concurrent.

Chief Inspector Elaine Ferguson, leading the hunt for Angelika, said last night: "As a result of the response to media coverage, we have established that the man we are looking for is in fact Peter Tobin.

Ms Ferguson added: "This new information is of considerable importance. I would stress, however, that everything possible is being done to trace Angelika, and we have no information at this time to suggest that she is with Mr Tobin.

Tobin was originally charged with attempted murder. Judge Mr Justice Waterhouse described it as "an appalling incident, I think the worst I have ever come across".

"When the police arrived to speak to me, I asked Pat to stay in case they wanted to speak to him as well. He said he would gladly talk to them. "He did so but then disappeared."

Tobin first arrived at the church six weeks ago as part of a religious group called the Loaves and Fishes, who help homeless people in the area.
