Tobin, 60, had been doing odd jobs at St Patrick's Church for about six weeks. Angelika went missing after spending the day painting a garage with him.

He spent time in a young offenders' institution and served jail terms for burglary, forgery and conspiracy. He attacked the two 14-year-old girls at his home in Havant, Hampshire, after plying them with drink and drugs. His six-year-old son was in the flat at the time.

He used a false name - Peter Wilson - to cover his tracks. But soon after he left the community, near Coventry, members saw his face on the BBC's Crimewatch and reported him to police.

"The police eventually came and took a statement from me and asked me if I had ever left my kids alone with him. That gave me an idea of what it was all about.

Angelika had been working as a cleaner in Glasgow since July. She was due to return to the Polish city of Gdansk next week to carry on her studies.
