The origins of Cheo Tau are still not clearly defined. Culturists and scientists have offered three suppositions:  One legend is that Van Di Thanh who lived in King Tran Trung Quang Period (15th Century) one day passed a field in the rain and died suddenly. From that day people honoured him by rowing open boats everyday to present offerings to him.

The second legend refers to two generals, Trieu Khac Phuc and Ly Phat Tu, who both proclaimed themselves as emperor. After waging war on each bringing great misery to their subjects, Trieu Khac Phuc sent a message of peace to Ly Phat Tu. Tu’s army went on boats, while Phuc’s went by elephant, together they discussed peace, and Cheo Tau was born from the meeting.

The third legend refers to the time of Hai Ba Trung (Trung sisters) who defeated the Chinese enemy, using boats as the means of transport. People say that Cheo Tau is sung to remember Trung sisters.
