The Loretto High School teacher who was fired last month after it was discovered she had once volunteered at a Planned Parenthood clinic has reached a settlement with the school, according to her lawyer.

Marie Bain has agreed not to sue Bishop William J. Weigan, who ordered her firing. She also will not sue the Catholic Diocese of Sacramento or others responsible for her losing her job. In exchange, Loretto High School has agreed to compensate Bain an undisclosed sum for her lost income.

Bain was let go by the diocese following a complaint filed by the parent of a student at the all-girls high school. The parent reportedly had pictures of Bain volunteering at the family planning agency.

In a letter to the school obtained by News10, Wiegand said the public nature of Bain's activity at Planned Parenthood was "inconsistent with her position as a teacher at Catholic High School and her role as a collaborator in the formation of Catholic women."

Bain said her involvement with Planned Parenthood took place prior to being hired by Loretto this fall and that she had not participated in agency activities since taking the teaching job. She also said that when she was interviewed, she told officials she was not Catholic.

In a statement released by her lawyer, Bain said she was especially angered by accusations that she urged women to seek abortions while she volunteered as an escort at the clinic.

"I strongly support access to information so no young woman ever has to face the difficult decision whether to terminate an unwanted pregnancy," her statement reads, in part. "If she is confronted with that decision, however, I believe it is between her, her doctor and her conscience. I would never 'urge' an outcome, one way or the other, for her."

Bain's lawsuit had claimed her termination represented sexual and religious discrimination, as well as a violation of her First Amendment right to free speech.
